Quality: Todd Phillips series uses the story of Joshua and some of the conflicts he went through to encourage us to develop godly attributes. He brings out good points, some obvious but important (not all good things have to be obscure) and some not so obvious but equally important.
Usability: The questions included should spark discussion in most moderately sized groups. Some of them ask about experiences that members of your group may or may not have had—such as visiting an important monument or “holy” place, and the reaction to being there.
Relevancy: Joshua stimulates discussion on vital subjects: prayer, redemption, strength and remembrance. These are themes that never become obsolete.
Creativity: This resource makes a bid to relate experiences of the group members to the experiences of Joshua. It didn't always work for me because I hadn't experienced some of the things that Phillips talked about. I think it might be more relevant to a group of people who are excited about US history—probably that will generally mean an older group of people. Not a problem, as there are plenty of us out there.
Theologically Sound: Definitely. No problems here.
GENERAL OVERVIEW:
Joshua: The Hard Life is a four-session presentation based on the story of Joshua, Moses' right hand man. Each 5-6 minute session features a short teaching given by Todd Phillips relating the experiences of Joshua to contemporary life. It is unquestionably directed toward a USA audience with its references to monuments, US history, and so on, though the principles are applicable to all.
The first session talks about prayer: Where? When? Why? How? Are we more likely to pray when things are going well or poorly? Session 2 talks about holy ground. What is it that makes a particular place special? What sets it apart for God? In session 3, we're exhorted to be strong and to talk about how we can tap into God's power. When God works in our lives, do we even remember? The last session speaks of “Stones of Remembrance” and talks about the ways that Israel set out to remember the things God had done for their nation.
All in all, this is an excellent resource. It may not work as well for as wide an audience as some of Bluefish's other products, but for those who relate to it, it will spark some great small group discussions.
