Joshua - Be Strong and Courageous Review
by Anne Groves on Friday, May 15, 2009
God, in his almighty love and grace, encounters us today in the midst of battle. Christians of all ages and stages find themselves in the midst of war. The spiritual battle between God’s love and the principalities of this world manifests itself in our lives through wars against poverty, broken homes, drugs, pornography, violence, apathy, suicide, loneliness, depression, AIDS, and terrorism. The God of Joshua is one and same God of today. Just as God encouraged, delivered, and provided for Joshua in the heat of physical battle and leadership, God beckons us toward His loving arms as we struggle through the evils and injustice of our time.

“Joshua: Be Strong and Courageous” provides a great small group study guide enabling leaders to navigate through the battles faced by Christians in our current culture.. The scriptures referenced are refreshing, encouraging believers to cling to God through difficult times as well as providing a practical means of doing so (i.e. – prayer, remembering God’s faithfulness, etc.).

The DVD segment of “Joshua” is disappointing, however, as most people will not identify with the parallels between American historical leaders and Joshua’s story. While participants will cognitively make the connections between the Biblical story of Joshua and the DVD content, and perhaps gain historical appreciation while doing so, Joshua’s lesson of courage and strength could be better applied through the real life struggles of the believer today. Furthermore, the use of Biblical comparisons to American leaders and monuments through visual and audio teaching draws the viewer to focus more on the glorification of American nationalism than the inner-workings of the soul in the midst of battle.

The power and fruit of “Joshua” rests primarily in the discussion questions and Bible study. Leaders will find the lesson easy to navigate and may benefit greatly through challenging participants to explore the battles they encounter every day. As barriers are broken and spiritual warfare is identified in the lives of Christ’s followers, the Kingdom of God is at hand! With deliberate discussion, small groups will reach new levels of authenticity and experience the power of the Spirit moving through the Body of Believers as Joshua’s story teaches Christians to be strong and courageous in a war-torn world.
